City Public Works employee killed after being struck by a vehicle while repairing potholes

Update:  On Tuesday, January 31, 2017 Omaha Police Accident Investigators issued a citation to Alan Solarana for misdemeanor Motor Vehicle Homicide in this case.

Update, January 27th, 2017: 48 y/o Salvatore Fidone III has died from injures sustained in this accident. His organs will be donated.

A City of Omaha Public Works employee was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle while repairing potholes this morning.

Omaha Police and Medics rushed to the intersection of 144th and U Street at 9:49 a.m today for a report of a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash.

A City of Omaha Public Works truck was parked blocking the curb lane of northbound 144th, just north of U Street.  The truck and its crew were preparing to repair potholes.  One of the crew was standing on the driver’s side of the truck.

A 2012 Toyota Camry was northbound on 144th in the inside lane.  According to witnesses the Camry drifted over and struck the worker. The worker was transported to Nebraska Medicine in critical condition by Omaha Fire Department Medics.

Neither excessive speed nor alcohol use were factors in the crash which remains under investigation.

The driver of the Camry was identified as 53 y/o Alan R. Solarana of Omaha who was uninjured in the crash.

The City of Omaha worker was identified as 48 y/o Salvatore Fidone III of Council Bluffs, Iowa. He suffered a head injury and was transported in critical condition.
